The Real Heroes

FIFA Football World Cup · Fine Art Limited Edition Prints

Curatorial Essay

“Real Heroes, the acclaimed photographic series featuring fine-art limited edition soccer prints by Clint Strydom, continues to resonate as a celebration of soccer in its most authentic form.”

At a time when the global game captures the world's attention with the FIFA World Cup 2026 taking place in the United States, Canada and Mexico, these photographs remind us that the true power of football lies not only in the stadiums of international competition, but in the countless children who play simply for the love of it.

Soccer is often told through the spectacle of the professional game — packed stadiums, global superstars, and the theatre of international tournaments. But beyond the floodlights and television cameras lies another story, one that unfolds daily on beaches, dusty township grounds, and improvised fields across South Africa.

With worn balls, makeshift goals, and limitless imagination, these children play simply for the love of the game. Here, soccer is not spectacle or industry; it is community, expression, and belonging.

Through Real Heroes, Strydom invites viewers to reconsider where the heart of football truly lives. Away from the grand arenas and international spotlight, it thrives in the joy of children who gather wherever space allows, carrying the spirit of the game forward with every kick of the ball.

The defining image of the series — a child, a ball, and that look in the eyes. No filter, no performance, only the pure love of the game.

On a stretch of Transkei sand, the match unfolds with an intensity the world will never televise. The boundaries of the pitch are whatever the environment provides — and the joy is total.

Soccer as community, expression, and belonging. Strydom finds heroism not in the famous, but in children whose unfiltered devotion embodies the spirit of football itself.

The improvised field becomes sacred ground. In monochrome, the game is stripped to its essence — movement, dust, and the unguarded faces of those who play.

The worn ball — the humble heart of the series. An object of devotion, patched and persistent, carrying the spirit of the game forward with every kick.
